Hatchery Fish
The Bogacheil River has become a famous destination for hatchery
winter run steelhead from November 15th. to early January. While anglers from all over converge on the Bogie, hatchery and Native steelhead proceed up all our other local rivers largely unmolested. Come out for this off-season fishing and (given decent weather) you may find some of the most productive fishing of the year with almost no other anglers in evidence.
Winter Natives
The main event
The Olympic Peninsula has the best runs of large Native Winter Steelhead
in the world. During the Peak Season, starting around Feb 15th and running from April 15th. I guide every single day that the rivers are in shape. At the end of the day I take time to exchange reports with other guides to find out how each run on each river fished. This gives me a great day-to-day understanding of where the best numbers of hot fish are moving. I take pride in my ability to get anglers to productive interesting and uncrowded water and turn them on to multiple fish days. Whenever I can I concentrate our efforts on hot bright lower river fish that will move aggressively to a swung fly.
If you’re a Spey Caster (or want to be), the Peninsula has some very interesting and mostly neglected Spey water. Even if you have fished the Peninsula before you will sure to be surprised at the quality, quantity and productivity of the swinging runs here.
Fly-fishing for Winter Steelhead can be cold and hard, it is not uncommon for anglers to go days between fish. Because of unpredictable river levels many trips have to be rescheduled. But there are days, a fair number every winter, when fish numbers and weather conditions
match up to create great odds for anglers to hook one or more very big steelhead on the fly.
The peninsula gets good numbers of fish well in excess of twenty pounds every winter, if you want to hook one of these fish I’ll do everything possible to stack the deck in your favor. |
